In the face of the Gateway Pacific Terminal proposal, the Lummi Nation fought hard and strategically, maintaining the importance of their treaty rights and claims from time immemorial.
One could argue that public, non-Native opposition to the GPT helped the Army Corps of Engineers come to their conclusion, but the final statement only concerns holding up the Lummi Nation’s treaty fishing rights. Lummi Nation, with support from Indigenous and non-Indigenous folks alike, won the fight against the GPT, hopefully preserving and maintaining the sacred and vital lands and waters of Cherry Point for generations to come.
