The Haudenosaunee are an alliance of five Native American Nations located in the Northeastern corner of the United States of America. Hundreds of years ago, these five nations—the Seneca, Cayuga, Onondaga, Oneida, and Mohawk—were at war with one another. But Great Peace was delivered on the shores of Onondaga Lake, unifying the tribes into one great democracy.
Today, Onondaga Lake—located close to downtown Syracuse, New York—remains arguably the most sacred site for Haudenosaunee Nations to this day. However, due to extreme pollution by major corporations and land claims disputes, the Haudenosaunee have not been able to properly carry out their responsibilities to the lake.
